That Hideous Strength

That Hideous Strength

One of my favorite Lewis books, which I'm currently re-reading for the Nth time. The title is a couplet from a poem by Sir David Lindsay, written in 1555, referring to the Tower of Babel:

The shadow of that hyddeous strength
Sax myle and more it is of length

The lesser-known subtitle is A Modern Fairy-Tale for Grown-Ups. Lewis also created an abridged version that was released under the title The Tortured Planet.

The covers are mostly atrocious, except for the first edition, which I can't yet bring myself to buy.
